TCP/IP Network Model

Transport Layer
The Transport layer uses TCP and UDP.
TCP provides a reliable virtual circuit (connection-oriented) for
application processes. Connection-oriented means that a connection
must be established between systems before they can exchange data.
Furthermore, TCP uses acknowledgments between systems to ensure
data delivery.
UDP is a connectionless protocol for application processes. It is faster
than TCP for certain applications since it does not require setting up a
connection and handling acknowledgments. It is also known as a
stateless protocol because systems using UDP to exchange data have no
indication of the operational status of one another.
Figure 1-6 compares the Transport layer of the TCP/IP model to the
Transport layer of the ISO/OSI reference model.

Mobile WiMAX: Toward Broadband Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks

The first part focuses on radio frequency (RF), signal processing, multiple in-multiple out (MIMO) technology, and identifying challenges and possible solutions in the physical layer. An examination of protocol issues follows, including those involving medium access control (MAC), quality of service (QoS) in point-to-multi-point (PMP) and mesh networks, cross layer optimization, mobility management, handoff in heterogeneous networks, energy management, and link adaptation mechanisms. The final part considers issues regarding security, economy, and system capacity in the WiMAX. Mobile WiMAX: Toward Broadband Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks is an important resource for those interested in understanding all aspects relevant to the technical, practical, economic, and policy issues concerning WirelessMANs. It offers comprehensive practical and technical guidance on the fundamentals and recent advances in general WirelessMAN, as well as the latest standard specifications in IEEE 802.16a/c/d/e families.

Small Antenna Design

As wireless devices and systems get both smaller and more ubiquitous, the demand for effective but small antennas is rapidly increasing. This book will describe the theory behind effective small antenna design and give design techniques and examples for small antennas for different operating frequencies. Design techniques are given for the entire radio spectrum, from a very hundred kilohertz to the gigahertz range. Unlike other antenna books which are heavily mathematical and theoretical, Douglas Miron keeps mathematics to the absolute minimum required to explain design techniques. Ground planes, essential for operation of many antenna designs, are extensively discussed. The book will also include a CD-ROM with design software that will greatly simplify readers’ daily design tasks.

Security and Quality of Service in Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

QoS in relation to ad hoc networks is covered in detail, with specific attention to routing, QoS support in unicast communication, and recent developments in the area. Secure routing, intrusion detection, security in WiMax networks and trust management are also covered, the latter being based on principles and practice of key management and authentication in distributed networks. Representing the state-of-the-art in ad hoc wireless network security, this book is a valuable resource for researchers in electrical and computer engineering, as well as practitioners in the wireless communications industry.
